Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Level I Training

Our atrium is expanding as we add Level II in August. Elizabeth Piper will return to present Level I training This course is open to all parishioners and nonparishioners.

Family Rosary

On one Wednesday of every month, there will be a FAMILY ROSARY in the CHURCH beginning at 5:00. Dates for this year include Jan 12, Feb 2, Mar. 2, Apr. 13, and May 4 Come and pray with us then stay for dinner in McNamee Hall. If you're planning on dinner, please remember to make your reservation online by the Monday before. The website link is on the home page of our website.

Registration for 2010-2011 School Year

Registration for 2010-11 session is ongoing. Please complete a registration form, found under the "Forms and Calendars" tab and return it to the PSR office. Registrations will be processed as they are received. Late week registrations may not be processed in time to begin on the following Sunday.

Our population of children and youth participating in PSR sessions in 2009-10 exceeded 1450! Catechists are needed to help our children learn about their Catholic Faith. Please consider volunteering. Please let us know if your child has special needs We do our best to provide the best environment and support for EVERY child. Adults are always needed to help with children who need extra care. Please let us know if you can help.

Jubilee Music

Jubilee Music is a free class on Saturday mornings for children who have disabilities as well as those who do not. Musical games and activities are used as a vehicle to help the children play together. At Jubilee Music, the children will work on social skills, communication skills, play skills and developing respect for differences as we build up the Body of Christ.

Ongoing Fundraisers

The Teen Mission Trip and other PSR programs depend on your donations. Please consider making a contribution to the Teen Mission Trip Fund or the General PSR Program Fund.

We recycle your old cell phones and used ink cartridges. Money earned from redeeming these items helps cover the costs of our mission trip. Collection bin is located in the teen room (room 3). Read our flyer for more information.

Overview of the Parish School of Religion at SPC

lambThe Parish School of Religion (PSR) offers a comprehensive program of educational, formational and social opportunities for the children and youth of the parish spanning all age ranges:

  • Preschool: Ages 3 and 4
  • Elementary: Ages 5-10 (Grades K through 5)
  • Middle School: Ages 11-13 (Grades 6 through 8)
  • High School:Ages 14-18 (Grades 9 through 12)

Age is determined by the participant's age as of September 1, 2010 for 2010-11 sessions

Sacramental preparation for children and youth is offered for Baptism; First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion; and Confirmation.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is offered at Sunday Morning Masses during from August through May.

Bible Study and Youth Ministry events are offered for both Middle School and High School Youth.

St. Peter Chanel's High School Youth Ministry (grades 9 through 12) offers a wide range of options for teens preparing for Confirmation as well as those Confirmed teens looking to increase their faith, deepen their love for Jesus Christ and learn more about the teachings of the Church.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR PSR SESSIONS

Registration for 2010-11 session is ongoing. Please complete a registration form, found under the "Forms and Calendars" tab and return it to the PSR office. Registrations will be processed as they are received. Late week registrations may not be processed in time to begin on the following Sunday.

BEFORE YOU REGISTER: Registration is ongoing and sessions are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants are placed in sessions based on availability at the time of registration. You must be parishioner of St. Peter Chanel in order to register for PSR sessions. New registrations must provide a Baptismal Certificate for each child to be registered.

Do not delay registration because of payment issues. Call the Religious Education office for alternative payment options. Please complete all forms and return them to us through the mail or drop them off at the front desk.

*A Medical Release Form must be on file for every person under the age of 21 left in our care. For everyone registered for PSR, that information is on file. If your child attends an event but is not registered for PSR, please complete the Medical Release form found above under PSR Forms. Parents must complete a new Medical Rlease for each off-site event your child attends.

Volunteers Needed!

2008-09 CatechistsOver 250 Catechists (see picture of 2008-09 catehcists) are passing on the faith to our children and youth in the 2008-09 year. Please prayerfully consider volunteering in the Parish School of Religion. Volunteer positions are described below. If you can help, please fill out the Volunteer Form and contact us at: cmarbury@stpeterchanel.org.

Considering Being a Catechist but Don't Feel You Know Enough?

Participate in Adult Education Classes (see Adult Education Tab on Main Menu) or contact the Religious Education Department. Spend some time learning and then pass it on by teaching a class. Opportunities for Catechist training and methodology are also offered each August.

Preschool, Elementary, Middle School and High School Catechists

Teachers of our PSR sessions are refferred to as "catechists". The word catechist has its roots in the very early Church. In the time of St. Augustine, it took the meaning of "to echo". Catechists are committed to four principles: To proclaim the mysteries of faith, to foster community, to encourage worship and prayer and to motivate service to to others.

  • Prepare and lead a weekly session
  • Implement service projects
  • Participate in Catechist Training Opportunities
  • Work with Director of Education to plan and implement scheduled family events

The Director of Religious Education and PSR Coordinators provide curriculum materials, syllabus and resource support.

Middle School, Elementary and Preschool Aides

  • Assist catechist with session duties
  • Lead the session when the catechist is absent
  • Participate in Catechist Training Opportunities

High School Catechist (2-4 year commitment preferred)

  • Plan and lead a weekly lesson
  • Help implement service projects
  • Participate in Catechist Training Opportunities

Sunday Office Helpers

  • Assist in special projects
  • Substitute and help with carpool during session times

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

  • Serve on a team once each month to plan and implement a Children’s Liturgy of the Word session
