Prayer Team Format:
- Introduce yourself – Ask the person their name.
- Ask "how can we pray for you?" – Invite them to share what they would like prayer for.
- At times people will ask to pray for someone else. That's fine, honor that request and pray.
- Once you pray that intention, ask if there is anything specific for themselves and then pray again.
- Physical Posture – Ask permission before placing a hand on their shoulder. If they decline, simply pray without physical contact. You may also invite them to open their hands in a posture of receiving.
- Pray together – One team member prays out loud while the other prays silently.
- Switch roles as needed.
- During prayer – Keep your eyes open and remain attentive to the person you are praying with.
- We're used to closing our eyes when praying - on teams we remain aware of our surroundings
- Sample prayer:
- Start by praying these three words: Come, Holy Spirit (and then pause for a moment).
- Lord, I thank you for the gift of my brother/sister, (name).
- Today (name) comes before you asking for (intention).
- We know you are all-knowing and all-good. We trust that you will receive this prayer and provide not just what we ask, but what we truly need.
- Pray again the three words "Come, Holy Spirit" (and then pause for another moment).
- Close your prayer time with: We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
- Follow up – Allow them a moment of silence to receive the prayer. Then check in: “How are you doing?” listen to them and then thank them for coming to prayer. People may desire a hug or handshake after this - whatever you are comfortable with.
- What if no one comes to receive prayer? That is absolutely ok, part of prayer team is just being available and present. Use this time to pray for our church community and country.
Important Note:
- Prayer teams are prayer teams, not counseling teams. If someone expresses a need beyond prayer, kindly direct them to speak with one of our priests.
- Thank you all for what you are doing this weekend, let's all join in prayer for each other as we begin to serve God's people in this very special and meaningful way.
